Checkpoint America
The point is fear. The point is public humiliation. The point is obedience.
I’m sitting here thinking this may be one of the most authoritarian threats yet.
When Trump talks about flooding airports with ICE, he’s not talking about safety. He’s talking about spectacle. A public flex in one of the most surveillance-soaked spaces in American life. And let’s not play dumb about who gets hit first: immigrants, Somalis, Muslims, Black travelers, people with accents, people in hijabs, anyone the state thinks it can isolate and humiliate in public.
That’s not security. That’s authoritarian stagecraft. Bullshit with badges.
Airports are perfect for it. Everybody’s tired, exposed, trapped in fluorescent purgatory, already surrounded by rules, uniforms, cameras, and unequal power. Flooding that space with ICE isn’t about protection. It’s about making fear visible. It’s about making people feel like they can be stopped, singled out, and fucked with at any moment in public.
And it doesn’t stop with immigrants. This same movement has an absolutely deranged obsession with trans people, a tiny slice of the population, and I’m one of them. I’m a trans woman, and that means I’m a target in a country where I was once free to be myself. So no, I do not experience any of this as abstract policy. I experience it as the same rotten machinery every damn time: pick a group the public has been trained not to defend too loudly, flood the culture with panic about them, then use state power to make the threat feel physical and normal.
Now add in the push for more detention infrastructure and it gets uglier fast. More places to warehouse people. More ways to disappear human beings into the system and call it order. Same old shit, bigger cages.
And yesterday, while all this is happening, major outlets were still laundering anti-trans panic through “debates” over our bodies and care. I’m so tired of watching media play cute with disinformation when real people are the ones getting crushed by it.
This doesn’t even feel like the sleek version of authoritarianism. It feels cheaper and dirtier than that. More Orbán than Beijing. More culture-war fascism than efficient superstate. Pick a minority, call them dangerous, build detention space, flood public life with fear, and teach the rest of the country to confuse cruelty with order.
That is how authoritarianism works. It turns ordinary life into a checkpoint. It teaches people who gets singled out, who gets watched, who gets humiliated, and who the rest of the country is supposed to stop giving a shit about.
Flooding airports with ICE is not policy seriousness. It is authoritarian theater. The cruelty is not a side effect. It’s the whole fucking flavor.

So true and the checkpoints are forming now… 🖕
